It's actually not that hard to take a photo of that quality if the shuttle was as close as the second picture depicts. -_-
Here is the original photo I took with a 200mm lens (compressed for the internet). At 21 megapixels, I can crop in to whatever size I want. Hence the close up shot above. =)
